Questions about our Good is beautiful sustainable homeware?

How can I be sure that Good is beautiful products are actually responsible ?

To be included in the Good is beautiful selection, products must meet a certain number of social, environmental or societal criteria defined by Maisons du Monde. First of all, this criteria was established according to the societal and environmental impact of our products, then refined on the basis of the expectations of our customers and finally validated with the help of independent experts based on robust external certifications. We rely on official standards and internationally recognised labels, and put all our efforts into the most transparent and complete communication possible for our customers. The selection criteria for our Good is beautiful products are detailed on the dedicated page of our website available here

If you would like to know more about the definition of our criteria, you can send us your request at goodisbeautiful@maisonsdumonde.com

We do not pretend to say that a product, integrating our Good is beautiful selection, is perfect in all respects, but choosing a "Good is beautiful" product means making a more respectful choice on both a social and environmental level.

Why aren’t all your products Good is beautiful ?

At Maisons du Monde, we work with more than a thousand suppliers and distribute several thousand references of furniture and decorative items every year. Our Good is beautiful movement is part of a transparent and demanding approach to progress. Transforming our selection to offer responsible and yet trendy products takes time, it requires supporting our suppliers in this transformation, in particular to develop production channels for eco-responsible materials in all our product categories.

Thus, today 30% of the references in our offer meet the Good is beautiful selection criteria, and we want to reach 40% by 2025.

This is just the beginning, we are in the process of constant progress and we want to go beyond these objectives to continue to develop the integration of responsible references in all our product categories. Even if a Maisons du Monde product is not part of the Good is beautiful selection, it must already meet our specifications and validate certain social and environmental prerequisites in order to be part of our selection.

How do you limit the impact of materials used ?

At Maisons du Monde, we are conscious that the cultivation, extraction and even the growing of plant, mineral or animal raw materials can present significant risks for our planet and for people. To do this, we have developed specific requirements for the materials present in our products which are included in the contracts signed by our suppliers.

For example, we prohibit all plant or animal raw materials from endangered species. We also exclude certain supply areas such as the Congo Basin or the Amazon for wood or cotton from Uzbekistan or Syria (non-exhaustive list). We also do not accept raw materials of animal origin that are not by-products of the meat industry or produced using cruel practices for animals (mulesing…).

How do you guarantee the working conditions of your suppliers worldwide ?

Respect for workers' rights from our suppliers is an essential prerequisite for our Good is beautiful selection. Thus, for all our products, we ask our suppliers to provide us with the address of the manufacturing plant. If this factory is located in a country where local regulations do not guarantee compliance with our social requirements, we directly request an audit of the supplier's factory to ensure compliance with our requirements in terms of working conditions. In the event of non-compliance with our expectations, we support our suppliers towards progress but the product cannot be included in our Good is beautiful selection. We can even go so far as to withdraw from a supplier if the latter does not wish to transform its practices and be part of a movement towards progress.

What are your requirements in terms of harmful substances ?

Offering our customers safe products free of toxic substances is the second prerequisite of our Good is beautiful selection. All of our suppliers are committed to meeting our requirements for the use of chemical substances. These requirements are based on the regulations applicable in the European Union, in particular the REACh regulations, but also go beyond them. For example, our requirements go beyond the REACh regulations, by prohibiting substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or harmful to reproduction. Each year, our specifications are updates to integrate chemical substances and support our suppliers in their substitution. Tests are also regularly carried out by independent laboratories to ensure that these requirements are met.

What materials are considered as “responsible” in the Good is beautiful selection ?

At Maisons du Monde, we take care to respect the health of our customers whilst contributing to the preservation of the environment in the development of our responsible selections. To guarantee sustainable management of our natural resources, we favour organic materials, certified by recognised labels (GOTS, PEFC, FSC...) or with low water consumption (linen, hemp...). We also favour recycled materials in order to limit our CO2 emissions by reusing natural resources. The choice of raw materials has a direct impact on the environmental footprint of our products, which is why we pay particular attention to the selection of our materials in the development of our Good is beautiful offer.

What do you mean by Made in Europe ?

Producing in Europe allows us to support the European economy industrial fabric and reduce transport distances. At Maisons du Monde, a product is considered as « made in Europe » if our supplier’s factory is located in Europe, and if they fulfil the principal production steps of the product. A product thus is integrated into our Good is beautiful selection if it is produced in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway or the United Kingdom.

You are talking about Made in Europe but most of your products are from Asia. Isn’t that contradictory ?

For more than 25 years, we have worked with suppliers located all over the world, mainly in Asia. This choice makes it possible to offer a multi-style selection, inspired by know-how from around the world and make it accessible to all. With our selection of Good is beautiful products, we have chosen to promote products made in Europe, alongside products made elsewhere, incorporating eco-responsible materials or contributing to the preservation of know-how, to meet the expectations of our customers on the development of the European economy and the reduction of transport distances.

To learn more about our Good is beautiful criteria for each product, you can find the product information available on our website www.maisonsdumonde.com.

How do you determine know-how to preserve ?

Within the Good is beautiful selection criteria, we have chosen to promote certain products whose production contributes to the preservation of traditional and local know-how. To meet this criteria, we work with our suppliers to ensure that the manufacturing techniques used come from a know-how characteristic of the region. The supplier must call on local labour trained in this know-how in a process of transmission, thus enabling this community to ensure its economic sustainability.

Are the responsible products from partner brands on the Marketplace part of the Good is beautiful selection ?

Some partner sellers in our Marketplace have already joined our movement and aim to comply with the same requirements as Maisons du Monde products in terms of responsibility: compliance with social, environmental and chemical substances requirements, and also compliance with criteria defined by Good is beautiful. Thus, the products of Marketplace sellers meeting our criteria are included in the “Good is beautiful” selection.
